“Ideal Market” explores the fertile grounds where community grows. Small businesses form the bedrock of solid communities by providing economic strength and independence as well as supplying a public space where relationships begin and neighborhood concerns are voiced. It is in these modest venues that one can see, hear, and feel the heartbeat of a neighborhood. The goal of “Ideal Market” is to document the roots of community in images and sound. By coupling photographs with sounds recorded on-location, the viewer has the unique experience of listening into the still image. It is in the casual everyday noise of life and chatter that one finds the true value of business. This project recognizes small businesses for doing more than just offering goods and services, but for helping a community begin a journey towards empowerment.
Documentary photographer Lauren Flotte photographed each business while Astoria Jellett recorded the distinctive sound of the establishments, together creating a fuller experience of the community.
